The controversy between socialism and nationalism within the left in
In a controversy broke out in relation to Catalan nationalism led by two intense Catalan characters on the left Antoni Fabra i Ribas and Andreu Nin . The second published in the Reus newspaper La Justicia Socia l organ since of the Socialist Federation of Catalonia on February an article where the relationship between socialism and nationalism was raised. While nationalism attacked the structure of unitary tyrannical and dominating states socialism fought the capitalist regime private property and wages the modern form of slavery. In this article it was stated that if socialism pursued the liberation of men the second sought the liberation of peoples as Rovira i Virgili defended . These two struggles were generating great tensions in modern countries.Nin explained that nationalism and socialism seemed like two antithetical terms but their purposes were confused and complemented each other an intimate connection existing between them both threatening the foundations of society which is why they were eminently revolutionary. While nationalism attacked the structure of unitary tyrannical and dominating states socialism fought the capitalist regime private property CXB Directory and wages the modern form of slavery. It was evident that we were in the era of socialist internationalism but also of the rise of stateless nationalisms that corroded state structures of the size of Empires such as the Austro-Hungarian or the Turkish-Ottoman to give two fundamental examples. If socialism achieved for Nin the collapse of the power of the bourgeoisie disappearing the injustice of economic inequality nationalism would manage to defeat the bourgeoisie with its struggle by taking away its instrument of oppression that is the state.

For all these reasons it seemed logical according to Nin that Spanish socialists would pay attention to nationalism as was happening in other countries because until then none had dealt with the connection between the two. The columnist wanted therefore to do so. Antoni Fabra i Ribas responded in the same newspaper stating that the nationalist problem did not exist for the socialists. Nin in response provided in a second article a set of examples where socialism was linked to the nationalist struggle such as in Finland where socialists fought for autonomy against Russian power with the support of the Second International. He also alluded to the respect for the nationalist sign existing in Austrian social democracy. In this sense let us remember the concern developed by Austro-Marxism for the nationalist question taking into account the intensely plurinational reality of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
